Homeopathy is sometimes known as "energetic medicine" and works on the
basis that, given the right catalyst, the body is able to overcome
virtually any disease. If you think of our "immune system" as a car,
then giving a homeopathic remedy is rather like putting a road sign into
the body to energetically tell the car (our immune system) which way to
go in order to get to the right destination (a return to health). See
our
"what can be treated"
page for an indication of how versatile this method of health is.
In the eighteenth century a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, completed
trials known as "provings" into his new medicine, Homeopathy. From these
trials he observed that if the catalyst (a remedy) given is diluted and
succussed (vigorously shaken) many many times, then the medicines become
"energetic" and more effective. Because they don't contain material doses
homeopathic remedies reduce the likelihood of unwanted effects. He called
this potentisation, and modern homeopaths still use these terms.
How are remedies chosen?
The selection of a particular remedy is made according to the principle of
"like cures like". A substance that can cause a disease can also relieve
it, when given in a potentised form. For example, chopping onions can
cause streaming eyes - a symptom similar to that experienced by certain hay
fever sufferers. Therefore, onion (the remedy Allium Cepa) could be used
in its diluted (potentised) form as a treatment for hay fever when streaming
eyes are a problem.
